SPACE-CHAIN / PHANTASY
PARADISE PLAZA - MIAMI DESIGN DISTRICT
COMPLETED
ANDstudio was hired to take the concept sketches by artist Yona Freidman and make them a reality for his exhibition during Art Basel 2019. Yona is a 95 year old Hungarian-born French architect, urbanist and artist, who is known for his concept of “mobile architecture”. In 1958, Freidman wrote of the concept, buildings should: 1) Touch the ground over a minimum area, 2) Be capable of being dismantled and moved, 3) Be alterable as required by the individual occupant. Due to the sloping site, ANDstudio had to design cast-in-place concrete footings to anchor the steel cubes to the ground, while providing ADA accessible pathways for patrons to experience the artwork. This was the first time the artwork was exhibited in the U.S.
